Ludhiana, August 09, 2016 (Neel Kamal Sonu): In a first-of-its kind surgery, a team of experts, led by cardiologist Dr Paramdeep Singh Sandhu in Fortis Hospital Ludhiana, performed a complex heart surgery to implant a sophisticated device in a 47-year-old man. Known as a cardiac resynchronization therapy defibrillator (CRT-D), an MRI-compatible device, this new-generation instrument synchronizes the muscles of the heart, in case of weak pumping of heart. This could prevent future heart failures, sudden cardiac deaths, and give patients an overall better quality of life than previously had.

Amritsar, January 17, 2015 (Online News India): Rupinder (name changed) is an 8 year old girl from Pathankot. At the age of 6½ years she was unable to walk properly. Thereafter she could not get up from the bed or chair. She stopped going to toilet without assistance. She had to be lifted to school and thereon she deteriorated. In merely 2 years she was bedridden.

She displaced symptoms mimicking muscular dystrophy, a muscular disease. However Dr Manik Mahajan, neurologist with Amandeep Hospital diagnosed her with rare condition where in Dopamine levels drop in a patient called the “Segawa’s disease”.The disease a highly debilitating one. In merely 2 days after a simple treatment, Rupinder was running and jumping. Rupinder also went back to school. Dr Manik said, “The cost of Rupinder’s daily dose is just Rupee1 which needs to continue throughout life.”

Sri Muktsar Sahib, January 04, 2015 (Neel Kamal Sonu): The Punjab chapter of Indian Medical Association hold its annual academic conference in the form of mega event PIMACON at Sri Muktsar Sahib.

Day 2 of PIMACON witnessed great enthusiasm amongst doctors from across the state. Medical faculty comprising Dr Subhash Gupta from Apollo Hospital, Dr G.S. Wander of DMC Ludhiana, Dr Baldev Singh Aulakh member of medical council of India amongst a galaxy of renowned medical teachers updated the knowledge of doctors by discussing numerous topics. The talks became interactive when the participating doctors asked questions and clarified their doubts.

Sri Muktsar Sahib, January 03, 2015 (Neel Kamal Sonu): The Punjab chapter of Indian Medical Association is holding its annual academic conference in the form of mega event PIMACON at Sri Muktsar Sahib on January 3 and 4, 2015.

On day 1 Dr Sudhir Raj, President Punjab of the association inaugurated the conference by lighting lamp in the presence of doctors from various district branches across Punjab. Speaking on the occasion Dr Amandeep Aggarwal, state Joint Secretary of IMA told that under the leadership of Dr. Sudhir Raj, IMA had excelled in all spheres, may it be apt response to all threats over our profession, efforts aimed at improving the sacred doctor patient relationship, improved working of all sub committees, state working committee constitution and meeting after years or better communication through Whatsapp/facebook/email groups.

He stated that people of the country should have access to affordable and quality healthcare. The health strategy of the government needs to take healthcare to the doorstep of the people. The Minister stated that skilled and trained manpower formed a critical component of this strategy. The Minister was delivering the keynote address at the 11th India Health Summit organized by CII on the theme “Health for All - Call for Action”.

The Minister highlighted the initiatives of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare in providing healthcare in the country, including achievements under the National Health Mission, the Universal Immunisation Programme for the children, providing healthcare services for mother and child and addressing challenges posed by non-communicable diseases such as diabetes, cancer, hypertension etc. Naik stated that significant achievements have been achievements in addressing TB and Malaria, while there are concerted efforts being made to eliminate Filaria and Kala Azar.

Ludhiana, November 21, 2014 (Neel Kamal Sonu): The Punjab government would be starting 93 new Primary Health Centres (PHC) and 13 new Community Health Centres (CHC) in the state where world class health facilities would be provided. This was informed by Health Minister Surjeet Kumar Jayani while formally launching the National Urban Health Mission (NUHM) here today. He said six CHC would be built in Ludhiana city next year and the entire project will cover 41 cities including Ludhiana, Jalandhar and Amritsar.

The health minister said that an amount of Rs 101 crore would be spent in the state under the NUHM. He said that old hospitals would be modernised under this plan.

The minister also inaugurated an Urban Kiosk in Sanjay Gandhi Colony near Sector 32 Chandigarh Road where the residents of slum areas can get treatment round the clock. A PHC at Bhagwan Nagar near Dholewal was also inaugurated by the minister.
