Chandigarh, May 07, 2015 (News Team): Workshop on “Financial Literacy and Commercial Development” was organised on today for Phulkari artisans of Indra Colony, Manimajra trained under “Project Phulkari” by Enactus Dr. S.S Bhatnagar University Institute of Chemical Engineering and Technology, Panjab University in collaboration with Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI). Enactus has been organizing such workshops for Phulkari artisans in different villages with an objective to make these artisans self sustainable.

SEBI certified resource persons delivered lectures describing the increasing importance of financial education and how it is essential for the average family trying to decide how to balance its budget and invest further.

Functioning under the guidance of Faculty Advisor, Prof. Seema Kapoor, project ‘Phulkari’ aims to revive the textile art of phulkari. The team has been successful in forming a link between the trained phulkari artisans and the market, eliminating the role of middlemen.

Prof. Kapoor conveyed that this community also has few Female Sex Workers, who were trained in this art so that they could have a regular income, higher standard of living and above all, a higher sense of self esteem.

Enactus team president, Aviral Seli acknowledges the Walmart Women’s Empowerment Grant for this project, in which Phulkari skill is being imparted to a number of socially and economically deprived communities and one of them is in Indra Colony, Manimajra. A three months phulkari course was provided to them through a Govt. Vocational Training institute ‘Jan Shiksha Sansthan’ and now to make them well versed with financial aspects, this workshop was organized.
